Here at the zoo

I must say my farm has become somewhat zoo like. We now have quite a variety of different creatures besides cats and dogs. We have goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys. Then we got a llama. I do love this llama. Then because we didn’t have enough we got two alpacas. Now I really love them. I’ve never had a horse but taking the alpacas walking remind me of what it must be like to walk your horse. That is if your horse is short. I will post pictures soon. I hope soon I will find a halter to fit the llama so I can walk her too.  Someday soon I will post pictures of all the cute litlle animals at my house . Then everyone will know I live at a zoo!

Spring

Spring will be here before we know it and I will be frantic. Don’t get me wrong, I love spring. I don’t like mud, rain and storms. I always get excited the first warm days wondering if it’s too early to get plants , buy seeds, get the garden going. The thing I guess that freaks me out is one day its brown and ugly and then you go out and suddenly everything is green. Green grass, green trees, greenweeds! All these things need to be attended to . Spring is also the time when 4H gets revved up, meetings get into full swing and its time to start thinking about what living things need to be acquired for fair. All this takes time. It all hits at once. I go from not doing anything much to not having time to sit down.  I guess I will be happy even though I’m busy because right now it is nothing but gross here. It has started to warm up but now the snow is leaving and we are down to the ice underneath which is kind of slushy. Its nice but could this be a trick by mother nature?  Will we have snow again in another week? I guess we’ll have to just wait and see. Like they say,” In Ohio if you don’t like the weather , wait a few minutes and it will change.”

New home, New Life

So, we did it! We bought the house on the hill. The house I was worried about buying because it was on a hill, but when the price drops to an all time low how can you say no? My husband decided we should be in by Christmas. I will spare you the ugly details of the anguish the weeks before but it all worked out. We are moved in. No , we are not completely moved. We may never be moved out completely.I will deal with that when we no longer have ice and snow everywhere.

  1. I do love looking out at my view. I see hills and farmland. What could be better.?  Maybe tomorrow I’ll share the harrowing experience I had earlier this week in our new toy, a 2011 Polaris Ranger. It’s one of the things we had to have in order to live here. Did I mention the barns at the bottom of the hill?  ‘That’s a whole other story….

homeschool and other things

Another day of sitting. Waiting. How long will it take to do a math test? Is this all really necessary? I have been able to get a lot of work done for work. That’s a good thing. This is the worst part of having a kid go to school online. Is having to drag them somewhere once a year for three days while they do tests that have nothing to do with them. Isn’t that it? The government has to make sure all public schools are doing there job or they don’t want to give them funding. The only way to find out if they are is to test the kids to see if they are learning. My issue with all of this is that then the schools, in an effort to not lose funding ,only teach what’s on the test. It’s as if learning is not important, just passing government testing. That is why we home schooled in the first place.
That is what is important and why so many people home school. It is so their children will learn some important stuff. Things like how to be mannerly, how to keep a checkbook, in my case, how to read a map. Generally, how to be self sufficient. It’s a big deal to hear people talk about socialization. People believe my child is only socialized if they are in a group with kids their own age. Home schooled children are socialized in the world with all kinds of people, children and most likely a lot of adults ,and isn’t that what they grow up to be.
I am also upset to hear people say things about how they could not stand being around their children all day. Isn’t that a sad commentary? I love my children’s company. Maybe it’s about raising your children in a way that you end up liking them. That’s not to say they don’t act like children or have bad days, don’t we all?
I’ll get off the soap box now. Enjoy the sunshine.

Update on my life

So I’m sitting here waiting for my youngest daughter to be done taking her reading achievement test. This is one of the joys of being a parent of a child who goes to school online. Once a year you must drive to a hotel, this time a college and sit for hours waiting. You promise when you sign up for the school and they will not let you out of it, even if you have to go to a seminar for work. They “strongly urge you to find someone to bring them” If not they will have to have a teacher come to said location just for you. So here I sit.
Other news on the home front is that we will not be getting the house on the hill. I was trying to get my husband to call the realtor to look at it again which he did not do, something about needing to know what everyone was doing at any given time. Anyway, so I emailed about questions on the house and he told me there was an offer already. Yes, we could have also offered but the truth is my friend, Emily and my husband made me believe I wanted this house when I had that gut feeling that said I didn’t. Always listen to your gut. I had visions of being on the top of the hill with three feet of snow, animals to be fed and no way to get down the hill but walk or sled. Mr. Fix It isn’t always the best at keeping on top of things to be fixed . So even though he tells me I could get a gator , I have visions of that machine being one of the many that doesn’t run at any given time. Of course, I would be alone to deal with the problem, so all in all, I think my angels were looking out for me again. So back to the drawing board with looking at every weird house that comes along…….Have a good day.

I’m Back

To anyone who actually reads my blog I have been taking a break. Actually, I’ve just  been  lazy. I think sunshine does that. I want to just go sit outside.Actually, we’ve been busy looking at houses.Houses that are too small, houses that have water damage and houses that are out somewhere that resemble the movie deliverance. It’s been an adventure. The other day we went to see a foreclosure on the top of a hill. This could be the one. It has a pretty incredible view. It has a huge barn at the bottom of a hill. I’m guessing should this take place we would need to buy some kind of gator or 4 wheeler. I certainly ain’t walking up and down that hill. Of course, a friend told me I would then have buns of steel. Ok then, maybe I’ll stick with flabby ones. Anyway, the house is big and not bad at all. When looking at foreclosures you have to be prepared for bad but this was good. Now we just play the waiting game to see what the hubby wants to do. I just hate waiting around. Either you want to or you don’t. With him, you talk about it till someone else has snatched it up and it’s too late. Ugh! makes me crazy.   Well, just wanted to let you know I am still among the living .

A duck, where?

Ok, so here is another ridiculous animal story that I seem to be so full of. On the left you will see a picture of my side porch. This is the porch Mr Fix It started a few years ago and has never finished.(the story of our lives).I should have called this blog The Unfinished Story and everyday could have shared yet another unfinished project, but I digress. On the right is a picture of our Muscovy duck, Helana Jane, don’t ask, anyway there she is up on our porch. Yes, Muscovys can fly.
Helana thinks she is too good to hang with the rest of the ducks so she does her own thing, alone. Every spring she might get the idea that a little male company would be nice so for a small period of time she will come out and spend time with Drakey ( see previous story). Then she goes off and hides, last year in my flower bed and comes out some 35 days later with a bunch of ducklings. The weird thing about this duck is her love of cat food and my porch. She has decided when I feed the cats I am also feeding her. She flys up to eat with them but then sticks around to enjoy the view. Cute ,but not so much when my porch is covered in duck droppings. It has become a game, I chase her off, she comes back,. I chase her off…you get the picture.
Another little story about this crazy duck. A few years ago she had her first brood and she took them everywhere, even into the pig pen, yikes! Well, eventually she lost all of them except one. The next year she had them and every night she kept them out by our beagle. Now this may sound dangerous, but he does’nt care.Matter of fact ,for a while I think he thought he was their father. This was a wonderful situation , he protected them and sometimes he let them sleep in his doghouse. The problem came when the ducklings got bigger. They all thought they  should live together as one big happy family only the doghouse was’nt big enough. Every night the beagle would be barking continuesly until I went out and shooed all the ducks out of his house so he could go in! Yep, it’s intresting if nothing else!
